OUR HISTORY

In the spring of 2006, abstract painter and author Sean Starr teamed up with San Francisco writer Colin Nasseri to write what became a total of 24 autobiographical stories titled You, Me and Morrissey. The stories chronicled a lifetime of events, including love, loss, bigotry, violence, artistic birth, and mental illness. The stories were set to the soundtrack of a Smiths or Morrissey title or lyric, and how the music of British singer Morrissey influenced and altered the paths of the authors forever. The book was initially released in February of 2007 by now defunct French publisher Editions Marie-Claude. The book became a runaway hit through Myspace, with the first copy being purchased as a pre-order to a UK reader in just minutes after being made available. After months of struggling to keep up with orders, the failing Editions Marie-Claude sold the rights for the book to a Dallas magazine publisher. In the summer of 2007, the Dallas publisher offered Starr a position as Creative Director of a small new book press now called Subculture Books. By the winter of 2007, Starr had purchased the company and relocated it to California where he was joined by author Shane Lee and lifelong friend and University of Montana Professor, Marlow Ockfen. The company is now headquartered in San Francisco and publishes a variety of titles that deal with subculture movements.

OUR VISION

We aim to publish books that matter. Many of us grew up in, or joined subculture movements that helped mold who we are, and helped to mold cultural change. In a world inundated with frivolous and shallow entertainment, we strive to publish work from writers who explore their passions, and who work towards the goal of making societal change through their work.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a company that deals in printed media, we take our environmental position very seriously. Because of this, we use the latest advances in digital technologies to minimize waste whenever possible. This includes producing short print runs to fulfill wholesale orders for booksellers, on demand technology for retail fulfillment, and by co-publishing our titles in formats for electronic readers like the Amazon Kindle. We are proud to be on the cutting edge of environmentally responsible publishing.

OUR MODEL

We work with alternative retailers and booksellers to bring the work of our authors to new audiences all over the world. We have volunteers across the globe, through our Clan Subculture Program, that work regularly to connect retailers with our authors. Our titles are proudly stocked by specialty retailers, independent book stores, coffee houses and record stores. We also produce a variety of art related, charitable projects annually, like JupiterFest in Denton, Texas.
